THE POWER AND PROVISION PRINCIPLE (PART 2a): Being alert, equipped and ready to live for Him wherever he places us.

1 Peter 5:6-10

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Basic questions about gospel fruitfulness:

  •  Is it possible that the reason many churches in the West are not making missional advance (or having relatively little impact on our own contexts) is due to our chosen path to prioritise safety and comfort ?
  •  As a consequence, do our "Christian" lives which are swamped by material and emotional obsessions for this world, mean that we lack spiritual and divine power?
  • Is it possible to ignore the mission of GOD and whilst remain living in relative comfort be awoken to the reality that we are not living in the provision of GOD for the purposes of GOD ? What will it take for this to happen ? What would you expect GOD to do to wake us up to these realities?
  • Are there things in the church which prevent the gospel advancing in "established first world" countries, when conversely there are those countries where poverty and challenges pervade which are seeing so many come to Christ (even though the church may be more messy) ? Have we dressed Christianity up too much in middle class attire, over organised it to be a merely human administration ?
  • As an apostle who knew the resurrected Christ, Peter writes to a persecuted church in 1 Peter 4:16-17.  He sees the issues of suffering, (persecution, leaving comfort, being sacrificial yourself for the spiritual wellbeing of others, and living well under the microscope of hostile opposition) as very key to both the purposes of God and gospel advance. In short this is what authentic, living like Jesus looks like. As the world is allowed to seemingly suppress and oppress children of Christ, the gospel and name of Jesus is lifted higher. God's purposes are always buoyant and always good.

"Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And
“If the righteous is scarcely saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good."

In God's providence
even the most damaged and broken of us as people can still overflow with spiritual fruitfulness.

PRACTICAL CHALLENGES AND EMOTIONAL WEIGHTS TEST THE POWER PRINCIPLE AND PURIFY OUR SPIRITUAL METAL:

Take for example the electricity and power outages, water cutoffs, basic food supplies and travel challenges in Ukraine these last few days. It has become the norm for many pastors and their families to experience 4-6 hours a day without electricity. Can you imagine this reality in this context. You are responsible for the safety, wellbeing and spiritual encouragement of many, yet you cannot get online, or operate in pastoral ministry or even family circumstances yourself. Simultaneously your family is sleep deprived, wearied by nightly raid alarms, tired of hiding between two thick walls or hunkering in the bathroom during drone and missile attacks. Add to this the excessive financial charges for banking, and other types of heating and cooking, corruption which may increase during combat, and the growing economic challenges of less employment and higher transport costs.

  • Of course all this is designed by the enemy to bring fatigue, and many are shot in their emotional human capacity,  yet supernaturally the church is accomplishing more than it has ever accomplished. How is this possible?
  • What is the greater challenge of reliance in Ukraine? ... to see the believers keep going with basic daily provisions, or to see them stand firm for Christ in torture as their families are captured and kidnapped with the promise of prosperity if they denounce or dishonour Christ? Both are weights many of us are not used to lifting.
  • How are believers able to keep going? Is it really true that man does not live by bread alone... do we believe this?  Have we come to define life as basic comforts alone? or do we believe by faith that the word and gracious presence of God is enough for any circumstance ?
  •  I fear that Christianity in most of the West has become so very cosseted, that we not only assume comfort always comes as part of the "life package", but even more we feel we are actually entitled or deserving of a comfortable life if we try to do God's will.

Be alert to ...THE EMOTIONAL PROSPERITY GOSPEL.

Very few in UK evangelicalism would say they believe in or live for a "prosperity gospel", but there is a common approach to Christian living which I fear would leave many severely lacking if things got worse for the church. For many, "normal christian living" is seen as a settled routine of life.  Many Christians live in a preferred place where the Church is relatively well funded (compared to the rest of the world)). There are numerous places where there are no UK churches, but Christians hardly ever gravitate towards them, and there is a reason no one wants to plant a church there. I was talking with a precious friend who cited how his house went down in value (as guaranteed) on the day he chose to buy in an area to plant a church.

We do worship family and settled existence, which has driven numerous missional decisions for those in the prosperous West.

I am often surprised by how increasingly competitive UK families are to get their kids into good schools. It feels a little like a modern day gold rush or land grab, which guarantees a future. They will do anything for a good outcome. The idol of career and what defines success for our children, (and the spiritual poverty we bring our children up in as a result),  is a monster few speak of.

This drive for a "good school" decides where we live based on catchment areas, and this being a bit more expensive propels us to work longer hours to pay for it and cars which will enable us to commute. Living in such an area often coincides with a larger church which is full of like minded young parents who feel the same way and do not want to go near the nasty areas for their "children's wellbeing". Of course we understand this fear as a parent, but is this a real or imposed reality? Are there groups of the next generation gathering to avoid the real missional hotspots ?

One of my greatest pains in life was seeing my daughter in a primary school where those under 11 were pushing the drugs and crime of their parents, abusing (kicking and spitting at) teachers. This was due to us relocating for pastoral ministry which in our eyes was a step of obedience. Many of our fears as parents were exceeded about how bad a school can be, even when it is trying so hard not to be. Yes, my daughter certainly  paid a cost for being in such a place, and the guilt torcheres me, BUT...LET THE STORY PROGRESS. In God's grace I believe it made my her a more compassionate person, and our family way more aware of a life we could've easily been cut off from.  We started praying for people we would've never rubbed shoulders with, and enjoyed having them at our table. In fact their colourful conversation revealed what a boring lot some of our other church friends were. They opened up transparently, deep frustrations, expressed appreciation and love in ways more touching than those who were in church. Our family, missional and spiritual life was richer for being out of the confines of the holy huddle. Just to complete the story for full exposure, she is a also now a complete brain-box and doing brilliantly in her degree. This is not the most important thing however, and her relational skills which I've seen in mission trips are off the scale. What this reminds us though is that God has ways of giving you more than you expected when you walk in obedience and follow his safe keeping in missional advance.

Often young Christian families in the UK have chosen or had some financial flexibility and liberty to move near a local fellowship which "provides for the family" a multitude of programs. The expectation or assumption is that all programs and weekly activities will continue to be well managed, the leadership is expected to be constant (not sent to a frontier situation) ,and that leaders will be so trained that they will never make a mistake or  unsettle the church. Good churches are seen as those who do not "rock the boat".

Many of us as parents believe that our kids would not survive spiritually if we weren't part of a "big healthy church" (Note to self... that term can mean different things to different people). What does this say however of what we envisage as God's ability or capacity to keep us? Is our faith so fragile that we need the tangible existence of a big church so that we can see with our eyes that God is with us. Can a human network really be the foundation of what we truly rely on for Christian life? or is the Christian life a matter of faith in the unseen transcendent power of God himself , displayed so clearly to us in Christ (Heb 1:2) ?

1 Peter 1:8,

Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory...

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

We believe that when we lay everything on the line for him he hears our hearts, and sees us as an open book, and we will never out-give God. I know this (deciding schools, and where to live,  where to invest our families future) is a wisdom call for every family and I am not trying to minimise it. I just wonder if our reticence to step into a danger missional zone says more about our lack of preparedness to trust God as we do so, rather than his ability to keep us. Maybe the best thing we can teach the next generation is that God is big enough and gracious enough to help them even though we have failed and been seen to fail (Psalm 78), then they too will trust in him and not themselves.

...he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them. the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,

so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments

WE ARE MADE FOR THE STORM:

Biblical church by contrast to the over sanitised safety zone, is about sailing on rough sea , being led by a skipper and a team who rely on the Lord who is greater than the storm. In fact if I can say it reverently the skipper is always the risen Christ. (Matthew 8:23-27). His hand is on the rudder even when we have to trust in faith that he can control things even when we can't see his hand on the rudder. When the Spirit leads, obedience will lead us into greater temptations, greater tests of faith and greater storms (Matthew 4:1) in order to show his surpassing power to sustain us in perseverance through them.

To return to the battle analogy, Biblical church is about training and encouragement for frontline engagement with those who are not yet part of the family of grace, and need to be plucked from certain destruction and brought in for emergency healing. Biblical church is a military hospital not a package holiday. We are about increasing engagement as we fight to win, rescue and save, not running from away from engagement for fear of loosing. Church is not to make us feel better or psycho sooth us to live better in a happier life of isolation, a temporary fix in order that we be readied to worship at the idol of commercialism on Monday morning. Church is a mobile military hospital which goes wherever the battle is raging next, and wherever God has appointed the next storm.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS?

OBSERVATIONS:

1) I am noticing that church leaders in hard (persecution, unreached peoples, and frontier mission) situations do have such a messy malaise of challenges each day, yet they seem to think more clearly about eternal issues and prioritise what is really important. There is greater clarity for life... however complex it gets. This is God given, and there can be no other reason for it. Lord give us this clarity for living !

2) I am noticing that spiritual leaders in places where the battle is "hot" do make mistakes as they "have a go in faith", that they are not afraid to fail.  The difference is that their congregations are defined by grace, transparency and by urgency of what really matters at a pivotal time and in a consciously critical context, and this is part of what keeps God's people moving forward in his strength, provision, power and presence of God.

3) What people have signed up for and expect really matters. If people are signed up to your church because it promises comfort and to fulfil their desires, you will reap a torrid season when it doesn't provide it, and even if it does what are you achieving for the gospel? How is the mobilisation for the mission of God going where you are ?

If your church promises to follow Christ whatever... , the payoff will be increasing and unceasing.

Focus on Him, being alert to His priorities. Having humble reliance on him really works, he makes sure of it.

I ask myself as I ask you... would our resources be invested in the right place to live fruitfully for the long haul, should persecution or mega poverty, the removal of all comforts, rights and routine fall on our Christian lives? If the enemy of the church turned up today at our doorstep, how would our lives unmistakably declare that we belonged to the missional family of God and are investing everything in the gospel?

This matters also to the enemy : (1 Peter 5:8), Don't be fooled.

Consider also that our spiritual enemy, the hater and opposer of the church is never distant from any child of God, however far we may seek to isolate our lives from missional and spiritual battle lines. He is prowling, ready to devour our passion and distract us from anything which ultimately matters. His greatest tactic is to make us content to be out of spiritual growth, when we feel comfortable with the idea that we would be better of out of spiritual service, that the comfort of life will overflow when we avoid stepping out into the unknown in faith. In this we may appear or may feel most safe, but the reality is the opposite. In isolation we are most prone to his manipulation, in our idleness most prone to failure in temptation (think of David alone in comfort in 2 Samuel 11 and how that ended up spiritually and generationally).

ARE YOU LIVING BY A HIGHER POWER?

When Chris Martin excitedly sings to millions about a higher power, and declares amongst the lasers of the mega stadium that  "this boy is "electric", I'm not sure any of us are totally convinced he knows what he's on about and precisely what this power is for normal every day life. The best definition deciphered between his lyrics is that the love of another woman (her song of love) enables him to feel better in the moment and about himself ("singing every second" and "dancing every hour"). This is a good summary of how our world deals with sadness. Finding a distraction rather than a solution is the goal. Considering the multiple women Chris has been with and sung this about, (listed here but not for the feint hearted) and the roadside of crashed relationships, the sadness he's been through, i'm personally not convinced his idea of sex, and intimacy with multiple ex love interests is a  lasting or sustainable solution for him or us.  He needs Christ, rather than another failed relationship. He needs the one who will never fail him.

Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins was inspired to run at 100 and here she is  on YouTube at 103 / here at 105.  On first appearance this a beautiful story which does inspire us, until we scratch the surface of her motivations which are less inspiring. She confesses she is driven by her ego and desire to impress her friends. Even Julia is not satisfied in herself with what she is enabled (by God) to do. This leaves something of an aftertaste to this remarkable story which has been used to illustrate perseverance. Whilst the media loves a trier and is quick to leap on them as an "example to us all", we are left thinking of the wisdom of this ideology and the relational impact this would have, if we all lead ego driven unsatisfied lives. Is Julia impressive? Absolutely !.. but also increasingly very frail. Will Julia have enough strength to get herself and us all through tomorrow, next year and eternity ? Is trying against all odds ultimately enough for ourselves, never mind God, or are there some realities that we just have to face up to however well people think of us ? Will Julia be a hurricane for ever?

Do you know and can you define what keeps you going ?

Over subsequent blogs, we'll continue to think about the glorious reality of what God is doing in his people and how he is keeping them going. Ukraine, Eurasia, hostile to the gospel countries are demonstration stages to the surpassing keeping providence of GOD. I hope this will encourage you.

Am I being sensational or alarmist? or can we admit that at least on some level, each of us (regardless of context) will face this issue of perseverance and where we find our strength to carry on. It is an issue too critical to be wrong about, and we all need encouraging in it, however long we've been on the road and strong we feel.

Sometimes a climactic situation will bring these things into sharp focus, and how much we need God. How can we carry on without him? When bereaved of a loved one, when several children lose both parents, and we are the ones to take care of them, when all physical things we count on disappear overnight, when the doctor gives us a terminal diagnosis... what will keep us going ? More exactly, what will keep us going to serve God, his gospel and those who need his love when we are running on emotional fumes, or in old age when our capabilities and our favourite avenues of ministry are taken from us? We need something much better than ego, more powerful than trying to defy the ageing process. Is it possible even at the end of our lives, and when we are at our weakest to be growingly profitable and not just painfully persevere... but flourish?

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

HEBREWS 12:1

"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day."

2 Corinthians 4:16

Use these psalms which remind us our God's ability to keep us persevering to the end. Our hope is in him !

Psalm 9:9 : The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Psalm 18:30 : This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

Psalm 62:8 : Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.

Psalm 118:8 : It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in man.

Also note: Psalm 86: Davids wise cry for God's help as he depends on his steadfast love. This is a great prayer to use. Pray it in the name of Christ (the true godly one who pleads his righteousness for us, the one who is eternally able). Cry from the heart in his strength, and he will hear you, bless you, and keep you. Do this also for the next generation knowing that God is big enough and gracious enough to deal with them also in gracious provision, along with us and all our failures. (Numbers 6:24-26)

THE POWER AND PROVISION PRINCIPLE (PART 1) : God's infinite power when everything else ceases and fails.

THE POWER PRINCIPLE: IT MATTERS !

In numerous conversations  (with Ukraine and believers around the world) this last week (and for many months),  the same theme has repeatedly occurred. Fatigue and lassitude has been the common experience of all who expend their lives on the purposes of God in a broken and groaning world, peppered by war, poverty, and natural disasters.

Life is hard for so many on our planet, and even immeasurably harder for those who follow the path of obedience in the context of a world hostile to God. Grace driven people are taken to places without food or electricity, social unrest, political chaos, depravity, poor housing, no transport, street crime, war, social displacement, mass casualties, corruption, many children without parents or those with parents left as virtual orphans.

Maybe life is harder for you in some way at this moment. You and I are wise however to see our troubles in the bigger context of our broken world, and this is part of the prompt for this extended consideration. Please consider then what true hardship is before grumbling. A broken TV, a blown down fence or slightly higher bills which disrupt "normal life" are of course painful in some degree,  but are relative and insignificant when placed in the context of the heat of the eternal spiritual battle which rages. We live in a world which prioritises the physical and immediate, but our greatest battles are spiritual, emotional and relational. Relational trauma and spiritual confrontation are part of the Christian life. The battle between Christ and his enemies has been ultimately won for all time at the cross (Col 2:15, Eph 3:10) , but we live awaiting the day of withdrawal, and skirmishes continue in the aftermath on a catastrophic and cosmic scale, therefore crossfire is a daily experience. For many across the planet this means real hardship and true challenge.

Eph 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

At this moment an especially tiresome season seems to be upon those who take the gospel to the most unreached, or persevere with transformational generational ministry wherever the Spirit has directed.  Contrary to the way much our proud western media and age thinks, we are not the first generation to ever find life hard, this is nothing new in the history of the planet, and in reality we are amongst the most blessed and privileged on the planet. Life in a fallen world has always been hard, and for those who follow Christ, take up their cross and follow him, hard living with habitual sacrifice is guaranteed, and sometimes in growing measure. Whatever our eschatology however, there is no denying that there is an increasingly climatic feel to our world as the gospel and kingdom of Christ boundaries reach into places which are new frontiers. What are the resources available for such a time, and do you habitually have them ?

PLEASE STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF FOR SOME "ME TIME"

Extraordinary perseverance will undoubtedly be the necessary Christian experience and reality for even basic living in the hardest of missional situations. Whilst some may try to excuse themselves from overseas service, or from hard sacrificial living (right where they are) by saying that this frontline missional experience is not their calling in life, I want to suggest that this is not what the bible says. Yes we are all called to different places and equipped with different gifts, but the basic biblical view of all those created by God is that we are made for his purposes alone and not to serve ourselves,  regardless of which epoch or situation we are born into by his goodness. Loving God with all our hearts (Matt 22:37) is the default priority, not loving ourselves. We are bought with a price, by the saviour of the world, and therefore beautifully owned for the glorious global mission of God. This is an undeserved privilege not a chore. We have been bought by love to declare the unsearchable riches of Christ, and in this treasured position, in all of life, in redemption, sanctification and daily need we lack nothing. As reminded in Eph 6:12, our real battles are not in the physical realm of capitalism, materialism, (new cars, mortgages and broken washing machines), but in the spiritual realm of obedience to Christ and perseverance in obedience.

Rather than thinking of those who live out total reliance on Christ in hard places as something extraordinary then, distanced from us, we should learn from their helpful example and illustration of how to live better, more focussed if we live in a more comfortable territory today. Obedience in the context of all ordinary christian living is base camp. Obedience is the appropriate expression if we love Jesus Christ. (John 14:15-24). We should take expertise from those obedient at the frontline nexus of the battle line, and prepare ourselves with it.

If we live in a country of relative missional freedom, how much more should be attuned to making the most of every opportunity? (Eph 5:15-16). Being a foot soldier or orderly for Christ doesn't mean that we can't learn from those in special forces, it just means we have even greater opportunity to learn in greater safety and privilege where the consequences of being negligent and making mistakes have been even more forgiving. Having said this, we are aware however that if frontier mission is going to generationally advance further we will need more of those who lead in obedience and perseverance, not just more of those who follow.

Has familiarity bred contempt for those who live in comfort, distanced from suffering?

My conviction  is that many of us have become so familiar with our unchallenged missional freedoms, the comfort of living settled lives in God's grace, that we don't realise how grumpy, sanitised and totally insurgent for true sacrificial mission we have become. In the Western church we are keen to complain or even subconsciously blame God for taking away the comfort of the church which is only present because of his love and grace. We are a grumpy and accusatory lot even to those who belong to the family of grace, The so called Christian "twitterati" have made a profession out of analytical complaint. Sadly there is a lot to expose in the modern veneer of lightweight bible belt, but we are left asking if like Lady Gertrude  some protest too much " ? Is our complaint actually a cover for not  getting on with the mission God has given us, a window on our lacking sincerity to the mission of God and our side-stepping on the sacrificial path of Christ?

Jonah is a great illustration of our missional laziness and grumbling. Rather than praising the God of incomprehensible missional love by counting it a privilege to serve his greater purposes, we find a cozy place to grumble in small minded self obsession. There is always more to complain about in a fallen world, and the Israelites where masters of it (Exodus 16, Numbers 10). Remember though that God's word reveals this to be spiritual death / deadness (1 Cor 10:10). A visible part of the spiritual sickness of any life, nation, or church, is we become obsessed with small things...

Jonah 4:10

And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labour, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”

Persistent reliance on God to deal with frustrations and obstacles comes with an ordinary Christian life of faith, in a spiritual war of attrition which is constantly testing on both daily and seasonal regularity this side of heaven. The question of our perseverance in such a situation  is not whether we need to train and discipline ourselves for perseverance, we all do. The question is whether our growth in spiritual muscle leads us to be even more profitable in frontline spiritual warfare each day whoever we are, wherever we live, and whatever season we are in.

This is not a question of missional office and situation, but of basic missional function for our awesome Saviour's purposes. My suspicion however is that many of us in the Uk, Europe and the USA particularly have become accustomed to our privileges, that we think the Christian life is something completely different, and revolves around a good time in a safe place. We are hunkering down in comfort as we run away from spiritual challenge, thinking we have a greater tolerance and ability for Christian living than we really do. This is an excellent foundation for spiritual unproductively, breeding a new generation of lazy, split loyalty disciples who think they can fight for both sides.  This is so dangerous!

Romans 12:3

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Rather than living on the higher plane of divine resources, it seems easier for you and I to give ourselves a "get out clause" to stay on spiritual "Civvy street" whilst the eternal battle rages one black away. In that place of comfort we live a depressingly limp spiritual life as we rely and fail in self dependence. We also live oblivious to the very real fact that there is no place where the spiritual battle is not happening. It is a lie from Satan himself that says we can be a Christian without being in a spiritual battle. There is no such thing as blissful ignorance in the eternal spiritual battle, just dangerous neglect.

GOD EQUIPS US MORE THAN WE CAN COMPREHEND WHEN WE LIVE FOR HIS PURPOSES

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  • Consider what keeps Daniel amidst fire (ch 3), lions (6) and godless, hostile,  arrogant dictatorship.

  • Consider God's provision for Elijah amidst the SHOWDOWN and potential humiliation of Carmel. (1 KINGS 18).
  • Consider Caleb, his faith model and mentored encouragement of Joshua  and what drove him (Numbers 14) to want to take the mountain in faith, even though God's enemies and his aged knees were all against him and the vast majority of God's people had no confidence in God.
  • "If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us."
  • God is able to keep us in the appropriate demonstration of his power (Jude 1:24-25). When our purposes submit to his, our confidence is in him alone and we are utterly transparent that he alone is the only one able to keep us and provide for us, we can be 100% confident in his safekeeping.
  • When we talk with friends who live in the context of brutal spiritual warfare (maybe also physical warfare) without food, physical support, or any of the comforts we enjoy we might be tempted to be waiting for their failure. With human eyes we wonder how they could carry on ? Conversely though, those who are spent and drained by going God's way... also  have a supernatural energy which seems to "kick in" the moment that every last drop of their personal tanks and reserves run out. The undeniable truth of recent days in Ukraine has reminded me and taught me to a greater extent by vivid illustration , that however great the battle is, God is greater. The question is whether you and I admit there is a battle going on right here where we are, and what are we doing to be better equipped by crying in total reliance, humility, and unreservedly on GOD ?
  • Is our total trust in him today in something else?
  • What are we banking on as things get worse,
  • and ultimately as the day of ultimate judgement comes are we ready to give account for the resources God has entrusted us with ?
  •  We have been given so much in Christ, and therefore much is rightly expected. (Luke 12:22-48)

SAFE IN THE GRIP OF GRACE... WHICH IS BIGGER THAN ALL THINGS.

Is everything fragile and unstable ?

It has been a tumultuous week in numerous countries... but especially Ukraine and UK. Whatever your eschatological view, we live in climactic and unique times. Never has there been so much instability in the leadership of the UK. Compounded by independency drives from Scotland and Wales, resurgence of nationalism and sectarianism in Ireland, Brexit, a global pandemic, a broken geological system and an ever increasing fuel bill, we live in a time when everyone does what is fit in their own eyes (Judges 21:25). If ever :strong and stable" leadership was needed it is now. However, Mr McGuiinnes' tweet regarding his 4 month old son witnessing  4 chancellors, 3 home secretaries, 2 prime ministers and 2 monarchs beautifully sums up the volatility, velocity and temporary nature of our age.

Couple with this the devilish breath of hostility which drives a "military operation" to co-opt Iranian drones, forces and "experts" in order to destroy the lives of more civilians and obliterate or terrorise whole communities. In it there is no clear objective, just a desire for localised destruction and terror, hid under a cloak of lies and anger. Marginalised governments with diminishing influence can be drawn into increasingly erratic behaviour and goals. This does not increase their power on the world stage but further limits it, and the resources with which they will be able to operate.

In such a chaotic world, where is our hope ? Where do we find certainty, a steadiness for the future to build our lives and those of our family upon?

One of my favourite hymns sung in Ukrainian, Russian and English...

1) THE GRIP OF GOD'S GRACE IS NOT LOOSENED BY CIRCUMSTANCE:

In Mark 4:35-41 we are reminded of the unique, calm, immovable grace of our God which surpasses all times, generations, temporary storms, human doubts and efforts to destroy it. Two things hit me which relate to  our present circumstances...

a) CHRIST (THE ONE OVER ALL) IS WITH US IN THE BOAT:
The Lordship of Jesus as Creator, Sustainer, Saviour, Judge and vindicated / resurrected eternal Ruler cannot ever, ever, be changed. No human construction, campaign, obstinacy or dissension will ever change this however loud the decibels of complaint and opposition get... HIS GRIP remains calm, steadfast and strong. His presence with us should fix our eyes on the certain nature of his company. He is the one who will never leave us or forsake us, The controller of all things comes into our world and subjects himself to everything we strive against in a fallen world, (Heb 4:15-16) yet he was and is ...without sin. He lives for us and in us by his spirit to equip us in the storm, not to get out of it, but to show us his power in the middle of it.

Colossians 1:15-20

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,  and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."

b) HE GOES THROUGH THIS WITH US : There are so many current experiences which would  prompt loneliness for the christian in our present age. However... greater company than ever is gathering to display the majesty of the one with us (Hebrews 12:1) and his ability to not only keep us in the worst of times but use us as hyper profitable (Romans 8:35-37).

As battles rage, suffering increases and many lives are tragically ended in Ukraine, the church grows dynamically. As floods in Pakistan and Nepal submerge communities, the church continues to grow. As the heat is turned up on the church, it is purified. As the times become increasingly dark and Satanic, the church shines brighter than ever with the presence of the one who is the light of the world (John 8:12, Matthew 4:16) , and inhabits his church to be radiant across the world (Luke 8:16, Phil 2:15).

2) THE GLOBAL NEW COMMUNITY OF MISSIONAL GRACE SHOULD REMAIN STEADFAST TO THE COURSE. When stormy times come on the church there is always a temptation to "batten down the hatches" and regroup down in a ghetto basement to feel the safety and warmth in likemindedness. This is what the early church in Jerusalem did, before the storm of persecution pressed them to get on with the global mission of God, with which they had been charged and for which he had equipped.

I sense in the UK a growing dichotomy between those local communities of believers who are living for confinement and preservation (whose goal is to "STAY" in settled equilibrium) and those churches who are willing to "GO" with the gospel.

IS THE CHURCH RESTING OUT OF LAZINESS RATHER THAN IN FAITH ?

Interestingly in the bible, the new community in the scriptures is never defined by it's locality or geography, its people type or culture, but  by purpose and character within the dynamic purpose of the mission of GOD.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be MY WITNESSES in Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” ACTS 8:1

As God is not confined, so the church he inhabits and arrests for his purposes is not bound or restrained. In fact those who desire to define church for themselves or their own purposes (in restrictive, self serving leadership) often only see their "ministry" and church remain for a temporary existence which is characterised by increasing introspection and self destruction. Our most recent premiers in the UK are a good illustration on this.

THERE IS A HIGHER CALLING IN THE STORM:

The church is ultimately defined by God and not us, the biblical goal is never for us to establish a local church to serve ourselves, to be terratorial, but to see a dynamic missional community emerge for his glory. This strikes me as the primary and very basic misunderstanding in too many church planting movements and materials, a huge contributor to why some church plants fail. Whenever the planting of a church is seen as a goal in and of itself rather than as a means to serve the global mission of God, it is doomed to fail as a mechanism of human engineering. When storms come on the church (as they will), that which has been built with human resources reaps human rewards and consequences. (Matt 7:24-27). In the UK we have a graveyard of physical church buildings which have not fallen whilst the local expression of church has. Today in our generation and nation there are no shortage of night clubs, Indian restaurants, bespoke homes and carpet warehouses situated in old church buildings.  Building a physical building costing millions today for a church makes us no more missional or fruitful in the kingdom than the reality of our hearts.

The goal of the local church is to have no boundaries which restrict others coming into the missional community of grace, to be driven by nothing other than the mission of GOD. We are not here to define our own boundaries as his community, but to be swept in joyful submission as the Spirit leads us, and goes where He wills (John 3:8). Trying to confine the Living God to our constraints is foolish, sinful and disastrous. Contrarily there is great liberty and joy (2 Cor 3:17) in churches and leadership teams which get this dynamic.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!

Psalm 67:3-5

The mission of God is bigger than any one culture, one denomination, one parish, diocese or region, one nation or indeed several or dozens. It is for and includes all peoples.  Whether new believers are baptised in a bath in Bhutan or a pool in Pavlohrad, sing in Swahili with a adeudeu or in Dagenham with drum and bass, the intention and ambition is the same,,, to see others come to know Christ. We commend him and not ourselves or our culture. We transparently look to live him out in all contexts and through all storms, and his grip on our lives enables us to do so.

The new community should be a missional community without walls, going to all cultures, reaching out to Jews, Greeks, Belarussians, Bhutias, Nepalese, Sharchops, Tajikistanis,  and Montenegrins. The beauty of the global village and communications is that at times we are starting to witness "all as one" in Christ Jesus in a single virtual or even geographical location. Never before have previous generations been able to see such a consolodated reality glimpse of heaven, an open window on the global people of God being orchestrated into incorprated unity. The unprecedented migration and displacement of humanity of our present time increases both storm and missional opportunity. For this eternal kingdom expansion to happen though we need to be more focussed on Him than the daily storm. more concentrated on our ultimate task as ambassadors of grace and citizens of heaven than our momentary comfort as creatures.

The Christian life is an adventure
in the safe provision of God
not a snooze on the sofa
of our own making.

As followers of Jesus then we are not "stay at home" slipper warmers... resolute builders of our own comfort kingdoms, but pilgrims on a journey whose adventure is being led by the one who has safely gone before us. We need to remember that when Jesus taught Matthew chapter 6 ...life was fragile for those who followed him, the New Testament church was unestablished, without buildings, websites, savings accounts or any provisions surplus we may have today. They lived one day at a time trusting his grace as totally sufficient (2 Cor 12:9). This journey took them to the cross, it was not a life of comfort but of sacrifice as they followed the servant king through suffering to glory.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things will be added to you."

It is a sobering thought, that at least some of our present storms may be here to refocus us in the new community on the primacy of Jesus, his kingdom and calling.

Our God is bigger, bigger than all our storms, bigger than our needs of today and tomorrow. Be encouraged then friend, not to regress into a huddle with like minded "hunkerers" but to stand straight and step out with a missional community. When our eyes are drawn to Christ, the storm becomes less of a directive, decisions are clearly made, priorities are without nuance. The grip of our God's grace has saved us, is refining and is keeping us to move forward in his purposes. For us this is a good day. Whatever your situation, whether without electric or heating, in UK or Ukraine, in the basement under drones, or on top of a mountain of bills, let him take control of tomorrow. We may be surprised how blessed tomorrow will be as we rest in his safe grip and apply his priorities and Lordship into our storms.

WHAT A PERSON GRIPPED BY GRACE LOOKS LIKE:

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him

Every little helps - How we hope to encourage Ukrainian pastors and churches through the winter.

On our recent trip to Ukraine we had two aims...

  • 1) To encourage wherever possible, and
  • 2) Ask the question, "how can we be of most help" ?

In all such encounters where God is giving his people special grace and miraculous provision to cope (even flourish) with the darkest of times, we were the ones who came away encouraged. There are numerous stories of church congregations being 5-7 times larger than they were 6 months ago. This is particularly true in rural areas and where proactive teams are taking the gospel to those most hurting. God is good !!!

So what was the answer, how can we help our precious Ukrainian Church family through this pivotal and potentially brutal Winter?

The practical needs are great, but by God's orchestration many situations are not unsurmountable. God has given us the privilege of partnering in close fellowship through this time, and the company of God's people always refreshes. The indwelling word of God renews both mind and heart, in new gospel challenge comes new provision and we walk one day at a time by faith.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

  • Our relief aid continues and in faith we are praying for more provision as this

relentless and multitasking time of winter is increasingly near. Aid over recent months has opened doors, hearts and unreached districts to listen to the gospel. We want to maintain links with those most in need, and help build on the considerable trust given by those whose hearts are increasingly open, about the trauma they've seen, the big questions they have, and about their own need of God in his grace. Despite stories disappearing off our news, the reality for some areas is that aid is more needed than ever. We look to God to
provide for his glory. Thank you all who have given to relief aid over the last few months. In all areas, you have partnered with the growth of the Church and seen much fruit for your investment in the mission of God.
  • We have set up a special winter project knowing what a strategic time this is for encouragement. Many church leaders are exhausted (physically, mentally, emotionally). Yet at the same time ... the need increases as does the gospel opportunity. We want to avoid "short termism" / shortsightedness, our prayer to build up God's people / set up ministries for the long term, and reap eternal fruit.
We have committed to doing 3 things.
These are the priorities of the Pastor's networks, the requests of most strategic things to do to help all the churches, and encourage gospel ministry.
  • 1) Service Pastor's vehicles, and get them ready for the Winter with winter oil and tyres.
  • 2) Provide generators and heating for gospel ministry.
  • 3) Encourage Pastors: with fresh resources, online materials, and encouragement conferences.

NAVIGATING THE WINTER ...
FOR CONTINUING STRATEGIC GROWTH OF THE GOSPEL:
Here's why and where our help is so important:
  • VEHICLES: During the last 234 days, Pastors have used their personal (family) vehicles relentlessly. They have constantly travelled (tank and military hammered) roads, transported displaced friends, crawled through borders and checkpoints, delivered aid, distributed vital materials to keep people and churches going. Their vehicles are not ready for Winter but are groaning. In desperate need of a winter service and some TLC we look to provide for those pastors who need funds to do this, and be equipped with winter oil and tyres. Without help in this area ministry... pastors being on the move and the availability and accessibility of pastors to be where they are needed (when they are needed)... will simply stop in a few days time. A winter service and new snow tyres are relatively  big bills when life is lived "hand to mouth", but as a collective group of friends we can help. It is a small thing we do, but we are assured it makes a huge difference and will keep pastors on the move doing what they are called and gifted to do. May God keep them and aid them as ministers of encouragement, the word of life, lives and ministry full of Jesus Christ.
  • GENERATORS AND HEATING: The biggest numerical growth seems to have
landed on smaller churches who have been faithful and loving to provide authentic new community care. They have been blessed with new believers and the joy of numerous baptismal services through the Summer. However, now is the time for discipleship and ongoing encouragement, and soon that will become practically much more difficult.
  • Think of the pastor who 12 months ago was praying faithfully for young people in his church when he had none. Now there is no shortage of young people, new young people who have come to Christ, but how can he afford to heat the church for a youth meeting he never budgeted for, when energy prices are steeply on the rise, and his church heating system may not be appropriate ?

  • We have committed to helping numerous churches with the gift of a good generator to keep them going whatever the eventuality and situation, and limits of infrastructure. Ministry can continue and the true work in peoples hearts can be fuelled. Heating and energy can alternate to the cheapest option. For some churches who have seen extraordinary growth,  an extra gift to help with winter fuel, the certainty that ministry can be programmed to continue.
  • PASTORAL ENCOURAGEMENT: FUELLING THE HEART OF THOSE WHO BURN WITH COMPASSION AND TO SHARE CHRIST. The list of pastoral issues in such an environment is dauntingly overwhelming, Counselling is unlimited in need, from; trauma, rape, unwanted pregnancy, pregnancy when the father has just been killed, taking the life of another in conflict on the frontline, relationship stress and marriage breakdown, grief of lost loved ones, loneliness, big questions on evil and suffering. Post trauma has become the norm, sleeping in bathrooms and corridors between thick walls for safety, on tenterhooks for sirens and power / communication cuts... all takes its toll, and especially for those who see, hear and advise on all these issues.
  •  We have committed to supplying pastors with regular pastoral contact,

specialist encouragement and advice, online resources, spiritual food to aid sermon prep whilst time is limited, disrupted and used in emergency help. Along with this we plan pastors encouragement conferences to unpack more of this material, refresh preachers in the word of GOD, give leaders time and space for strategic planning, and  a time out of context to recharge in the confines of good friends, rest,  and trusted advisers. We run a small fund for such events which may be severely tested, but we believe this is of God and he will therefore provide.
  • ACTION is a "faith mission". This means that we trust God to provide. We do not want to publish numbers of either financial need, accomplishments  or set human goals of what might be achieved. Everything achieved is by God and for his glory.
  • It may seem foolish to some to attempt something for which provision has not yet been fully seen, but this is what faith is...trusting God that he will give at the right time and in the right amount. This is the experience George Muller had when looking after orphans in Bristol (read here), and it has been our experience too. When someone is hungry God knows. When a loaf of bread is needed God knows. When a bakery is needed to be built God knows and provides. When a young person who has suffered needs a home, God knows. When a church is needed to be planted and resourced God knows, and when his people who serve are in great need God knows. So here is our confidence....

ARE WE DRIVING ON THIN ICE OR GOING ON A GREAT ADVENTURE ?
  • This week we set the wheels in motion (pun intended) to purchase some generators in faith, set some dates to fix some cars, and purchase snow tyres and with that ...we trust God for the rest.
If you would like to pray with us please do. If you need any other information, please don't hesitate to get in touch, as we go on this journey of God's provision and miraculous work together.

With huge appreciation and much love,
